Chennai City Guide

Formerly known as Madras, the Chennai City is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal and has a population of 7.5 million people. The 34th largest metropolitan area in the world, Chennai is one of the most popular cities at present. There are several reasons that make this bustling city an ideal place to be.

Chennai is a city for people of all ages and backgrounds. With several unique attractions the place is often considered a perfect getaway that can be easily reached through air, rail or road, depending on your pocket and distance. The climate of the city is also not much of a problem. It is humid most of the year, quite hot in the summers and bountiful rains in the winter. The temperature is mildest in the months of December and January.

However, despite of its humid weather, Chennai is stormed by visitors all round the year. There is a lot to see and take back home from this 367 year old city. Some worth visiting places in Chennai are the Connemara Library, Elliots Beach, Breezy Beach, Ennore Port, Fort St. Gorge, Government Museum or the National Art Gallery, Guindy National Park, Guindy Snake Park, Marina Beach, Integral Coach Factory, National Shrine of St. Thomas Basilica, St. Thomas Mount and Valluvar Kottam etc.

Chennai is popular for its scared shrines. Chennai is not all about sightseeing. There are various activities for the visitors to take delight in. The young as well as the old love to stroll at the beachside of the famous beaches viz. Marina Beach and the Besant Nagar Beach. For the shopping sprees the crowded Pondy Bazaar and Ranganathan Street are the right places to hit. Here you can do lot of shopping with good bargaining. For some expensive and classy shopping there are big malls such as Spencer Plaza, Chennai City Center and the Shoppers’ Stop.

Those who are fond of music and dance can visit the famous VDS Arts Academy, Brahma Gana Sabha, Indian Institute of Music and arts, Kartik Fine Arts, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha and the Nungambakkam Cultural Academy Trust. Chennai is a famous center of the classical Indian dance Bharata Natyam and holds over 1000 dance performances annually. Chennai also boasts of some grand art and craft galleries like the Amethyst, Crafts and Weaves, Lakshmi Ethiraj Art Gallery, Contemporary Arts and crafts Showroom, Pot Holes, Vimonisha Art Gallery and the Manasthala etc. Chennai is also famous for its beautiful sarees and delicious food. The typical south Indian flavor is an addiction to people.
